A 4′ by 6′ is a nice size to work around. The smallest pad size I would recommend would be 4 foot by 4 foot. Our in-ground pool kits include a Hayward sand filter system and two Jandy valves. Size of pool pad: Depending on your equipment, the size of the equipment will vary. Best access to the pump basket, filter valve and clamp band, heater controls, and chlorinator should be planned for in your pool pad design.
Access to the electrical box should be on the left or right side, not behind the equipment, so you do not have to reach over it. The usual layout is to have the valves in front of you as you approach the equipment pad. It’s best if you can completely walk, stand, and kneel all around the equipment. You may need access to the rear of the pump motors at some point, so leave at least 1 foot behind the pumps. You need room around the equipment to stand and maneuver, but you also need vertical service access to remove pump baskets and filters, for instance. Pipe location also should not block easy access to the pump and filter. Spread it out. Pool pumps and heaters need room to breathe, and you’ll need room in between and all around each piece of equipment for service or repair to pumps, filters and heaters. Spend time drawing each pipe and noting every 90 degree or 45 degree turn in the pipe, every valve and each piece of pool equipment: pump, filter, heater, cleaner pump, chlorinator, salt system, ionizer or mineral purifier. To visualize it fully, you should draw it out on paper with pencil so you can erase and change it as you go. The goal is to design a functional and simple layout with room to maneuver and service the equipment with as few turns in the pipe as possible.
